Call to Order
Jennifer Howse called the meeting to order at 6:35pm
Approval of Agenda
Cheryl Sharpe approved agenda and Rachel Braga 2nd the motion
Approval of minutes
Rachel Braga approved last meetings minutes and Kelly Pascary 2nd the motion
Parking Lot Safety/Support- Guest: Warren Pantrey
Two issues , safety of kids, many parents are oblivious to safety
Traffic flow in and out of parking lot, worse on bad weather
Some parents aren’t following rules or process
Commitment 2 in morning and 2 in afternoon, mornings are worse, 20 minutes slots, parents wear vests to differentiate them, mingle in the parking lot
7:50 to 8:20 in morning. 2:20 to 2:50 2 people each slot
Tackle it more of a campaign, put it on newsletter, safety campaign
Promote walking to school, use parking lot in safe manner
Make it a safety blitz
Make it a few times in the year. Teach people about parking.
Motion to buy 3 vests, maximum up to $100. Motion by Amy. Seconded by Anna. All in favour.
Administrative Report a. EQAO update
Students level 3 and 4, we were below board average but above province, went down in grade 3 reading and writing
Grade 3 math, same as province and below board average
Looking at ways of improving, try to change things
Grade 6, focusing on math a lot of energy
Math above board and province, 10 above
Writing scores below board above province
83% at level 3 and 4
Focused a lot on grade 6 math in this school
b. SIPSA Plan
Sipsa targeted plan in math, trying to integrate math with mind sets
Using “Growth Mindset”… I don’t understand it yet, growing brain cells while trying to do it.
Targeted math at school, pair up kids that are not doing well to do better, find it helps for most students
A lot of kids sitting at 2.7 2.9, ways of helping them to hit level 3
c. November/December Calendar
Remembrance day november 10th10:35 am at school
Dance a Thon on 17th, starts first thing in morning, will finalize schedule
November 17th new parent day as well
Provide another alternative to kids that don’t dance: quiet activities
Top prize is a splatter party from 4 cats, 3 workshop prizes as well
To donate online, one must go through the Presswood Entertainment site (which links to the HDSB)
Reports go home on November 20th, Interviews weekly and on PD day november 24th
Bully awareness week as well that week of November 20th

d. Grade1-3 Spring Concert
Cindy discussed with the staff to get teacher input
1-3 Play has been at Christmas moved to spring time a couple of years ago
Last year was 150th of Canada so wanted to do spring concert in 2017, this year is the 10th anniversary of our school.
Staff much prefer spring time concert for younger classes as things are very busy approaching the holidays, need teacher support, takes away learning from classroom time
Kids ready to do performance in spring… less anxiety etc
Parent council take on initiative for after primary school event, december 13th is available but would be evening if want to do holiday event
Set a time to meet to discuss event , meet november 10th at 11:15 am school meeting, do it right after school assembly

December Play Spending, $1000, Anna Dapcevic made motion to allocate for december and spring productions mentioned in roll over, seconded by Sanjay Seegobin. All in favour.
Carnival roll over of $3000 for committee, Rachel Braga made motion and Cheryl Sharpe second motion. All in favour.
Emergency Snacks, $300 motion made by Sanjay Seegobin to allocate funds for emergency snacks, Jenn Howse seconded motion. All in favour.
Dance a Thon update- nothing to report at this time
Family Night update and date change
No theme yet
No motion required as not spending any money
Date changed to February 28th due to conflict of another meeting
School Council Still needs someone to be the Parent Involvement Committee Rep
Apply for grants , promote pic conference that takes place in halton
Bring a bigger perspective to group
Council looking for a volunteer coordinator.

Bullying, childcare booths
Initiatives given by schools,
Fundraising ideas came out
Spending money on flexible seating for classrooms (We have in our school, piloting in classrooms)
Stationary bike to make smoothies, ties in with healthy eating
You can rent it for school
Food trucks get own permits, no need to do it
Paint night for parents, to get to know each other
Volunteer forms- get them in
Get declaration to sign in each year if already have it in office
Who follows up on this, make sure ask volunteers to show documentation
Need a photocopy of form in school
Cheryl proposed a partnership with “Mabel’s Labels” as an ongoing fundraiser
Shop to support ideas, terra does it , Christmas flowers and plants
Terra, we pick a date for delivery, you can pre pick packages and deliver to school
Have delivered to school
Need 2 weeks in advance
Not done at this school yet. Tie it into grade 1 to 3 holiday party
Since hear anyways to pick up flowers and plants
We could promote it as a service
After november 17th put out holiday shopping through Emily carr
Cobbs may have ideas for fundraisers. Anna will follow up Dough raiser program
Discussed voting members, we have 8 voting members at present: Jen, Lynn, Cheryl, Randy, Sanjay, Kelly, Rachel, Dan
Motion to add Anna Dapcevic, Amy McMullen, Jodi Miller and Warren Pantrey as voting members of council. Motion by Jen Howse. Seconded by Sanjay Seegobin. All in favour.

CaRRnival can we move date as grade 8 Band members won’t be around (will be at wonderland)

Call to Order

Explanation of financial surplus plan procedures was discussed
An explanation of the different budgets was presented to council
When there is a surplus of our budget (includes, school board, school generated funds and school council funds) the principal needs to detail a plan of how the money is to be spent.
Process is slightly tricky to navigate as we have our annual CARRnival in June, and board spending is stopped at this time.
Where school council funds are concerned, council can discuss and recommend surplus spending at our May meeting.
We must go through “Tendered Vendors” for everything so we have to ensure we follow this process for all purchases.
Other items discussed, new portable has arrived, all fund raiser plans need to be submitted by October 25th, cross country competition went well, dates for school events were discussed, update on circular cabinets ordered for playground and new sun shades. We will have Halloween parade Oct 31st, Walk to school day October 4th.

A number of initiatives were discussed
2 large events and 2 small events per year
Danceathon was considered for November , very popular and good turn out by families, date to consider November 17th. Motion to proceed with the dance a thon by Rachel. Seconded by Jo.
Discussion as to fundraising possibilities: magazine selling, jewellery sales, gift card purchases
“Fresh from the farm” was considered a good idea to discuss for the spring. Rachel to take the lead.
Mabels labels was considered a good idea to implement immediately and put in newsletters and web sites. This is a handy product and can be an “ongoing” fundraiser. Motion by Cheryl to have a Mabel’s labels fundraiser. Seconded by Sanjay.
Cheryl will take the lead on this fundraiser.
Pita Pit lunches was considered a good idea as most parents want this.
Other ideas discussed are: Film.ca, YMCA days, grants from businesses
Year at a Glance
This was briefly discussed. We will have Halloween parade, Danceathon in November, School Play on Dec 6, Healthy School night, feb 21st, Grade 1-3 Concert in the Spring, CARRnival in June,
School council website
Rachel gave us update: Website has been created and ready to launch soon
Will list upcoming events and volunteer opportunities, and promote school council and school council initiatives
Walk to School Day-Wednesday October 4th
Joe and Cheryl helping
Will have Bucket Drummers
Will have cheerleaders and music
Will have chalk drawings on sidewalks leading up to school
Stickers will be handed out to all walkers
Anyone that can help that day will be appreciated.
All entrances to school will be covered by a cheering section to greet students
Primary Holiday Event
Dec 6 is school play for grade 4-8 students.
Discussion was held on something for K to grade 3, as the Grade 1-3 concert is held in the spring.
Ideas included a family holiday evening or have something during school time
It will be discussed at next teachers meeting to see any ideas teachers may have
Due to time constraints Jennifer will circulate ideas via email to council members over next few weeks to come up with some ideas for the school

Board & Super Council Rep: attend meetings and/or reviews meeting minutes and reports back to council
Communications: develops and oversees council website
Volunteer Coordinator: matching parents with opportunities within the school

Newcomer Welcome Event-Fri Sept 22
This event is open to all Newcomers to Canada, Ontario and all Kindergarten parents. Kelly and Jo have offered to assist in getting supplies for the event. Jen moved to allocate up to $150 to spend on food and beverages for the event. Seconded by Lynn
853 currently enrolled at the school
Another portable is coming to provide an additional classroom
Obstacle has now been complete, possibly more items to be added to keep kids active
Can start applying for grants at any time. Could be beneficial for the carnival to start applying soon
Wednesday night is reserved for school events. No rentals take place on these nights, however we do need to book the school in advance for our events.
